Speech audiometry examines speech processing ability and whether it is affected by disorders of the middle ear, cochlea, auditory nerve, brainstem pathway, and auditory centers of the cortex.
Speech testing includes a variety of tests, the most basic of which is speech audiometry, which assesses speech reception, discrimination, and recognition. The level at which the patient can hear speech is referred to as reception, the level at which the patient can discriminate between words is referred to as discrimination, and the level at which the patient can recognize and recall the word is referred to as recognition.
